AI Literacy in 2027: Seven Predictions

Published 21 April 2026 · 7 min read

Quick answer: In 2027 expect AI literacy to become a default school subject in the EU, mandatory CPD for regulated professions, and a checkbox in SaaS procurement. Prompt engineering becomes a small chapter inside broader literacy, not a standalone field.

1. National AI-literacy certifications

Ministries of education in the EU and Asia will publish their own stamps of approval. Expect at least three new certifications by the end of 2027, each with its own curriculum map.

2. Mandatory CPD in regulated professions

Medical boards, bar associations, teaching councils, and accounting bodies will all add AI-literacy modules to their continuing-professional-development requirements.

3. Procurement gates

Enterprise buyers will ask vendors to show that the staff operating their AI features hold recognised literacy certificates. This is already happening in public-sector tenders.

4. Prompt engineering folded in

As models get better at inferring intent, the skill of prompt engineering narrows. The field will likely fold into broader AI literacy as one chapter among ten.

5. Age-appropriate curricula

Primary, secondary, and tertiary curricula will diverge sharply. The five-year-old and the fifty-year-old will not — and should not — learn the same thing.

6. Multimodal assessment

Text-only quizzes give way to voice and interactive simulation assessments. A learner should have to demonstrate skill in a realistic scenario, not just recall facts.

7. Continuous content refresh

Curricula refreshed annually cannot keep up. Monthly refresh becomes the baseline, which means content infrastructure matters as much as pedagogy.
