- Output format control. Ask for JSON, Markdown, or a specific schema. Parse reliably downstream.
- Chain-of-thought. Ask the model to think step-by-step. Use reasoning models (o1, o3, Claude 4 thinking) when available.
- Iterative refinement. Give the model its own previous output and ask it to critique and improve.

- Tool use is first-class. Most prompts now include tool definitions. Prompt engineering includes tool selection and schema design.
- Reasoning models replace chain-of-thought prompts. For hard reasoning you pick a reasoning model rather than writing “think step by step”.
- Agent loops. A prompt now often sits inside a multi-turn loop with memory, retrieval, and tools. Prompt engineering bleeds into agent engineering.
What prompt engineering is not
- It is not fine-tuning (that changes the model).
- It is not RAG (that is a retrieval system, though the retrieved text becomes part of the prompt).
- It is not “prompt hacking” or jailbreaks (that is adversarial).
